The importance of finding a bra that fits you, both in terms of comfort and style, should not be understated. Underwear is the foundation of your outfit and the first thing you put on each morning. Finding the right fit and support can therefore have a significant impact on your day.
Here at Heist, we firmly believe that it is the responsibility of the underwear industry to innovate and adapt to your needs, not the other way round. You should not have to change a single thing about your body, or the outfits you want to wear, in order to ‘fit into’ or ‘suit’ a particular bra. This is not a matter of meeting halfway. The bra should change to suit you.
In this article, we discuss the difference a properly-fitting bra can provide and offer advice on how to uncover the ideal design for you.
The importance of a properly-fitting bra
Is your first thought when you get home from a busy day to immediately whip off your bra and ‘free yourself’ of its restrictions? Here’s the thing… a properly-fitting bra shouldn’t make you want to do that! Once you unlock the potential of a bra that actually does what it’s meant for, that restrictive feeling will become a thing of the past.
PROPERLY-FITTING BRAS...
1. ARE SUPPORTIVE & COMFORTABLE
When your bra fits you properly, it distributes the weight of your chest in all the right places. It takes the strain off your neck, back and shoulders and actually supports you from all angles. Back pain and neck pain are intrinsically linked with poorly fitting bras. If this is something you struggle with, there is a strong possibility that the root cause is sitting in your underwear drawer.
2. ARE DURABLE
When you wear the wrong size bra, it will likely have to work in ways it wasn’t designed to do. Certain areas of the bra may become stretched, while the stronger parts may not take on any of the strain that they’re meant to. This can mean that an ill-fitting bra is much more likely to need replacing more quickly. Disappointing for you, wasteful for the environment… it’s a lose-lose situation!
3. LOOK GREAT
When you’re wearing the right bra, you can 100% tell. It lifts, highlights and flatters in all the right ways. If you don’t feel empowered and beautiful in your bra, it is failing at its job.
How should your bra fit?
You can tell whether or not your bra fits you properly by using this quick checklist:
- Your breast tissue should be contained within the cups, rather than spilling out.
- The centre of the bra should sit at the centre of your chest, in between the breasts and comfortably flat against the breastbone.
- The band should lay flat against your back without a significant gap.
- The band shouldn’t pinch your skin or feel uncomfortable.
- The band should be straight all the way around your body, not lifting up on any side.
- The straps should not dig in at any point, nor should they slip off or require regular re-adjustments
- If your bra is underwired, this should not be digging into you at any point.
How to measure your ideal bra size
Whenever you are in the market for a new bra, we encourage you to take a fresh reading of your ideal measurements.
The measurements you need to take are your bust and your underbust.
Decisions, decisions… what bra type will best suit you?
So, hopefully by now you understand that there is not a one-size-fits-all approach to bra selection. This doesn’t just apply to sizing, but style choice is important too. Let’s discuss a few options:
BRALETTES
Best for - A more lightweight choice designed to support and lift your breasts without feeling quite as structured as a traditional bra.
PADDED BRAS
Best for - Just as much support with lighter coverage than a full-cup bra. Padded bras, like our Smooth Bras, offer lift that really enhances your natural cleavage.
THE CONTOUR BRA
Best for - Offering the ultimate in maximum support and supreme comfort. Our Contour Bra is our own innovative take on how bras should be, developed through years of research into how a bra can truly work for the natural body.
